Partial Closure of Alum Cave Parking Area
Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials announced the partial closure of Alum Cave Parking Area beginning Monday, August 26 through Friday, September 13 to complete parking area improvements.
The popular parking area will receive much needed improvements as part of the ongoing rehabilitation work along 6.1 miles of Newfound Gap Road from Chimneys Picnic Area south towards Newfound Gap. Crews will improve site drainage along with pouring new concrete sidewalks and resetting stone curbs. In addition, the south parking area will be expanded by adding thirteen parking spaces.
Access to Alum Cave Trailhead and half of the parking area will remain open at all times throughout the construction process. Due to the partial closure, officials caution visitors that the parking lot will likely reach maximum capacity during peak hours and weekends. Hikers should consider alternative routes to Mt. LeConte during this time period.
