SUMMARY:Part III of Heritage Book Series – Free for guests and Members
DESCRIPTION:Legendary Hunters of the Southern Highlands with Bob Plott \nPlease join us for another entertaining\, educational and fun afternoon and evening of history\, food and music in Part III of our Heritage Book Series\, as award winning author and MSMHC GM\, Bob Plott\, discusses his third book –Legendary Hunters of the Southern Highlands. \nFor centuries the Great Smoky Mountains have nurtured some of the most celebrated hunters and hunting dogs in American history. The stories of these illustrious characters—both human and animal – are included in this wonderful book\, and their spirits still linger here among the region’s roaring streams\, hardwood forests and misty peaks. Join Bob as we rediscover an era of self-sufficient mountain living\, when folks worked hard\, hunted for survival and fought for what they believed in –and many still do today. \nThe program will be followed by a book signing and delicious BBQ dinner\, culminating with music by Mike Ogletree and friends that evening. \nThe event is free to motel guests and Heritage Club members –there is an admission charge of ten dollars per person for all others.

SUMMARY:Steve “Piano Man” Whiddon With Angie Toomey
DESCRIPTION:Steve began playing piano at age 3 and there has been some slight improvement. After high school he performed in clubs\, restaurants\, honky tonk bars\, and anywhere else he could play for food\, tips\, drinks\, and various other  assorted methods of payment. He was even the organist for the Detroit Tigers for spring training games in the early and mid 90’s and never once caught a foul ball.\nHe later discovered that country clubs would trade meals and free golf in exchange for his musical services. Aha! Life was good! His waistline expanded but his golf game\nremained lousy.\nSomehow he found time to use what was left of his fragile brain to write some songs and then some more songs. Some rock\, some country\, and some nobody has figured out yet.\nIn 2001 Steve met Dave Magill\, a producer\, musician\, and studio wizard. The two hit it off immediately and started recording Steve’s songs in Dave’s studio. They continue to work together on many different projects.\nSteve lives in Maggie Valley\, North Carolina where he fishes\, hikes\, and loves the Smoky Mountains. His golf game remains the same.\n\nJoin us for an evening of live music with Steve on Thursday\, September 8 at 5:30 PM! It’s a free event\, with BBQ dinner available for $12. Cash bar is available as well. We hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Smoky Mountain Elk Fest – Returns!
DESCRIPTION:Step out of your end-of-summer rut and experience the Annual Smoky Mountain Elk Fest!  The third annual celebration of Elk in the Smokies  is a family-friendly event full of music\, entertainment\, craft vendors\, and educational demonstrations. You can expect to find lots of great food and drinks\, guided hikes\, creekside demonstrations\, wildlife artists\, crafts\, and kid’s activities. \nProceeds from the Elk Fest will help us raise funds for habitat maintenance and create other ways to keep our elk protected and happy. \nElk used to be abundant throughout the Western North Carolina mountains\, but by the mid-1800s\, the population was wiped out due to overhunting and habitat loss. \nAfter extensive research by the Great Smoky Mountain National Park Service and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation\, wild elk were reintroduced into the Cataloochee Valley in 2001. The original herd consisted of 52 elk\, and over the years their numbers have grown to more than 150. \nAs the elk population continues to grow\, though\, there are some interaction issues when the elk end up in places they aren’t supposed to be—for instance\, in our local farmer’s fields. Proceeds from the Elk Fest help us raise funds for habitat maintenance and create other ways to keep our elk protected and happy. \nFor more information visit https://visitncsmokies.com/smoky-mountain-elk-fest/or call 828-944-0761.

SUMMARY:Part VI Of heritage Book Series – Free for Guests and Members
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Bob and Jacob Plott’s book—Smoky Mountain Railways –A History of the WNCRR\, Murphy Branch and GSMR with Bob and Jacob Plott. \nJoin us for yet another fun\, informative and entertaining afternoon and evening of history\, food and music in Part VI of Heritage Book Series\, as award winning author and MSMHC GM\, Bob Plott\, teams with his son\, and co-author\, Jacob Plott\, to discuss their book\, Smoky Mountain Railways. \nBy 1869 railroads connected the United States from coast to coast\, yet the Great Smoky Mountains remained commercially remote and inaccessible with no outside railway service until construction began on the WNCRR in Old Fort\, N.C. in 1871. \nEven then\, it would take another 20 years before convict labor finally carved a 128-mile route to Murphy\, N.C.\, thus completely opening the region to commercial and personal expansion that few could comprehend –but all appreciated. \nTrain service literally transformed the region\, but it came at a terrible cost\, with literally hundreds of convicts tragically dying in the process. After great early success\, the railway line eventually fell into disarray by the 1960s\, before later being resurrected as an incredibly successful tourist railway—the GSMR. \nThe history of this line is a story like no other. It’s a tale filled with tragedy\, heroism\, blood\, sweat\, tears\, humor and nitroglycerin. Local authors Jacob Morgan Plott and Bob Plott tell the story of a line that refused to die. \nThe program will be followed by a book signing and delicious BBQ dinner\, culminating with acoustic music by Mike Ogletree and friends that evening. \nThe event is free to motel guests and Heritage Club members—there is an admission charge of ten dollars per person for all others.
