SUMMARY:Smoky Mountain Elk Fest – Returns!
DESCRIPTION:Step out of your end-of-summer rut and experience the Annual Smoky Mountain Elk Fest!  The third annual celebration of Elk in the Smokies  is a family-friendly event full of music\, entertainment\, craft vendors\, and educational demonstrations. You can expect to find lots of great food and drinks\, guided hikes\, creekside demonstrations\, wildlife artists\, crafts\, and kid’s activities. \nProceeds from the Elk Fest will help us raise funds for habitat maintenance and create other ways to keep our elk protected and happy. \nElk used to be abundant throughout the Western North Carolina mountains\, but by the mid-1800s\, the population was wiped out due to overhunting and habitat loss. \nAfter extensive research by the Great Smoky Mountain National Park Service and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation\, wild elk were reintroduced into the Cataloochee Valley in 2001. The original herd consisted of 52 elk\, and over the years their numbers have grown to more than 150. \nAs the elk population continues to grow\, though\, there are some interaction issues when the elk end up in places they aren’t supposed to be—for instance\, in our local farmer’s fields. Proceeds from the Elk Fest help us raise funds for habitat maintenance and create other ways to keep our elk protected and happy. \nFor more information visit https://visitncsmokies.com/smoky-mountain-elk-fest/or call 828-944-0761.

SUMMARY:Folkmoot Festival - Performance and Dinner
DESCRIPTION: A Folkmoot Performance Onstage with a Tented Dinner.  Food Trucks available as well.  Bring your blankets and Lawn Chairs!  Visit https://folkmoot.org/ or call Laura Shepherd at 828-452-2997 for more information. \nFolkmoot History\nIn 1973\, Dr. Clinton Border\, a Waynesville surgeon\, accompanied a local square dance team to a folk festival in Sidmouth\, England. There began the dream that would\, 11 years later\, become Folkmoot USA. Border was convinced that Western North Carolina\, which was already steeped in tradition and dedicated to the preservation of its own heritage\, was the perfect location for an international folk festival in the United States. In Folkmoot’s 35-year history\, the organization has hosted 8\,000 performers from almost 150 countries. Folkmoot performers are primarily college students who serve as cultural ambassadors for their countries. The Folkmoot festival is a strong example of international cultural diplomacy.
