SUMMARY:The Holland Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an unforgettable evening of live music with the Holland Brothers on November 10 at 7 pm. Nestled in the intimate and friendly atmosphere of the basement Speakeasy in the Meadowlark Motel\, this is an event you won’t want to miss.\n\nThe Holland Brothers are from the Piedmont region of NC. They play a style of music rooted in old-school country and country blues\, with close harmonies and blues harmonica. Drawing inspiration from Charlie Poole to Charlie Patton\, from Muddy Waters to the Memphis Jug Band\, from the country gospel sounds of Flatt and Scruggs and the Louvin Brothers\, from the high lonesome sound of Bill Monroe\, or from the pairing of Woody Guthrie and Cisco Houston\, the Holland Brothers\, together (as also in the 90’s rock band Jennyanykind) and individually have appeared in publications and events such as No Depression\, North Carolina’s Our State magazine\, the North Carolina State Fair\, Billboard Magazine\, as well as the NY Times\, continue to garner praise and gain new fans daily. \nThey have recorded music for and appeared in HBO’s Righteous Gemstones and Apple TV+’s show Dickinson. Their music has also been used in films such as Desert Saints (2002) starring Kiefer Sutherland\, The World Made Straight (2015)\, and The Legacy of the Whitetail Deer Hunter (2018). \nSimilar to the Piedmont songsters of old\, the Holland Brothers play a variety of styles and songs. Their sound is rooted in old-time country and country blues with aspects of vaudeville\, ragtime\, and jazz that includes choice covers and inspired originals. \nStarting at 7:00 pm in the SpeakEasy Bar\nNo cover charge\nCall 828- 926- 1717 for more information!

SUMMARY:Jeremy Rilko
DESCRIPTION:Born in Saginaw\, Michigan Jeremy Rilko is a banjo player living in Asheville\, North Carolina. After serving four years in the Air Force he separated to attend Western Michigan University. This is where he was introduced to bluegrass music. He attended bluegrass festivals which led him to purchase a banjo at the age of 24 and dove into learning Scruggs-style banjo. Early on in his playing days\, he was exposed to the likes of fellow Michigan natives: Billy Strings and Greensky Bluegrass as well as Bela Fleck and John Hartford. After completing college he threw everything in his car and moved to Asheville\, NC and began to cut his teeth at the local bluegrass jams. \nHe has been a member of Michigan-based Who Hit John?\, Supper Break\, and is currently a member of The Well Drinkers and The Asheville Cats. As a performer he has had the privilege to share the stage with: Vince Herman\, Lindsay Lou\, Molly Tuttle\, Ketch Secor\, Darren Nicholson\, and members of Town Mountain and Fireside Collective. He has also performed at The Woodford Folk Festival (Australia) and Merlefest. \nHe is on the verge of releasing a full length album of original music in April. It contains tunes that he has been crafting over the years on the banjo and guitar. Some songs are straight ahead driving bluegrass while others are more crafted with sweet melodies and lyrics. \nStarting at 7:00 pm in the Meadowlark SpeakEasy Bar\nCall 828- 926- 1717 for more information!

SUMMARY:Heidi Holton
DESCRIPTION:HEIDI HOLTON\n\n\n\n\n     Deep in the heart of southern Appalachia\, sounds from the Mississippi Delta echo through the lush mountain air\, haunting the fretboard of Heidi Holton’s well-worn Gibson guitar. Original and fresh\, traditional with a contemporary flair\, Heidi is turning heads with her mastery of the music of the Deep South. Her songwriting shines like the sweet glistening sweat on the brow of a Piedmont preacher behind the pulpit on a sultry Sunday afternoon. Following in the footsteps of guitar-slingers like Memphis Minnie and Reverend Gary Davis\, Heidi Holton is making a name for herself in the international blues community. \n     A 15-year-old Heidi found a copy of Hot Tuna’s first album in her dad’s record collection\, and was so inspired by the elegant fingerstyle blues guitar of the legendary Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane) that she bought a $60 guitar from a drug store in Ducktown\, TN and began to hone her skills. When an opportunity to study with Jorma arose a decade later\, Holton strapped an acoustic guitar to the back of her motorcycle and headed north from New Orleans to Ohio. She found a mentor and kindred spirit in Jorma and quickly became an accomplished finger picker and slide guitar player. With her musical skills on a new level\, Holton recorded her darkly seductive debut album\, “Mockingbird Blues” in 2016. \n     It wasn’t long before people began to take notice – including the iconic blues woman and national treasure Rory Block\, who produced Heidi’s sophomore release.  “Why Mama Cries” (released in 2018) includes Heidi’s damn near definitive version of the standard “You Got To Move\,” and positively brilliant Mississippi Fred McDowell-inspired original\, “Hardest Card To Play;” the whole album is a stunning step forward. Rory must’ve thought so too\, because the project forged a friendship that led to a whirlwind year of snowy road trips across the USA and into Canada. By the end of their latest wander\, Heidi had enough new material to begin the writing and recording process on her upcoming album\, “Black Strap Molasses\,” which was written\, recorded\, and produced at Rory’s home studio between their adventures together. \n     Heidi doesn’t perform so much as she casts a spell on her audience. There’s some serious voodoo going on in her live shows as she sways and moves to the sweet sting of her acoustic slide\, raising a hand in the air and stomping her foot. She holds the crowd in that raised hand; you could hear a pin drop. She’s got them. \n     Popular demand keeps Heidi busy playing about 150 shows a year to a wide variety of audiences. She recently completed a four week tour in Italy\, and plans to perform in the UK in the summer of 2019. She has opened for Jorma Kaukonen\, Rory Block\, and Roy Bookbinder and is a regular performer at the Arts and Minds Festival at the Fur Peace Ranch. In the words of her friend and mentor Jorma: “People often ask me if I ever worry about the future of our music. With artists like Heidi… the future is safe.” \n\n\nStarting at 7:00 pm in the Speakeasy Bar\nCall 828- 926- 1717 for more information!

SUMMARY:A. Lee Edwards
DESCRIPTION:Alan Lee Edwards has been a songwriter for over 30 years\, and became the main singer\, guitarist\, and songwriter for the band Lou Ford\, out of Charlotte\, NC. Punks\, alt. country fans\, and glam rockers alike agreed there was an honesty there\, an authenticity not built on outward style but inner substance. The songs spoke mostly of the ebb and flow of personal relationships\, and of the existence\, most of us south of the “middle class” immediately recognized as our own. They had critical respect\, too\, and from some of the best music magazines in the world — Uncut and Mojo both talked the band up breathlessly\, and they shared space on British “best of” compilation CDs with the likes of Lucinda Williams\, Richard Thompson\, and Paul Simon. Often lumped into the Americana catch-all\, they nonetheless mined the sunnier side of the street musically\, with Edwards’ biggest influences (Beach Boys\, Big Star\, Nick Lowe) never far from the surface. The very first published music review I ever wrote was on Lou Ford’s debut full-length\, Sad\, But Familiar. Something about that review still sticks with me: it was (if nothing else) deeply felt\, and if indeed the words served well\, it was because they served the point. I think this is something that A. Lee Edwards and I have in common: a belief in a plainspoken good thing\, without unnecessary or undue adornment. After Edwards’ post-Ford band The Loudermilks folded\, Alan did as he had famously promised in song years before and took his things and moved up to the mountains. Edwards has revisited his burgeoning back catalog of songs and become something of a road warrior. It is music that is personal without being personal-specific — call it “universal personal.” It is a sort of composting of shared experience\, something that is rather impossible to fake without a huge helping of empathy and a great set of ears. It is music that is direct\, and which can occasionally make you uncomfortable\, but later console you like that old friend you rarely get to see. A. Lee Edwards’ songs and fingerstyle guitar\, accompanied by Matt Royal on Bass\, as a duo with harmonies that recall classic Byrds\, Flying Burrito Bros and Buck Owens/ Don Rich. \nPress: \n“Pretty much anyone who’s heard A. Lee Edwards over the past 25 years knows that the former member of the bands Lou Ford and The Loudermilks deserves billing as a poet more so than a songwriter. The man’s got a way with words for sure\, and per new song “South of Sylva\,” his writing muscle’s far from atrophied. Hopefully\, this one’s a sign of things to come from one of North Carolina’s most gifted songsmiths.” – Bobby Moore\, Wide Open Country Magazine \n“Alan’s music “sounds like the product of a childhood spent listening to a cool aunt or uncle’s well-worn copies of ‘Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and ‘The Gilded Palace Of Sin’\, with ‘Exile On Main Street…” – No Depression Magazine \n“Alan isn’t just versed and influenced by the Americana and alt-country byproducts\, but the old school country and rock origination points of the music\, and you can hear this in his sound that is intelligent\, lively\, and multi-dimensional.” – Saving Country Music \n\nStarting at 7:00 pm in the Speakeasy Bar\nCall 828- 926- 1717 for more information!
