SUMMARY:Smoky Mountain Elk Fest – Returns!
DESCRIPTION:Step out of your end-of-summer rut and experience the Annual Smoky Mountain Elk Fest!  The third annual celebration of Elk in the Smokies  is a family-friendly event full of music\, entertainment\, craft vendors\, and educational demonstrations. You can expect to find lots of great food and drinks\, guided hikes\, creekside demonstrations\, wildlife artists\, crafts\, and kid’s activities. \nProceeds from the Elk Fest will help us raise funds for habitat maintenance and create other ways to keep our elk protected and happy. \nElk used to be abundant throughout the Western North Carolina mountains\, but by the mid-1800s\, the population was wiped out due to overhunting and habitat loss. \nAfter extensive research by the Great Smoky Mountain National Park Service and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation\, wild elk were reintroduced into the Cataloochee Valley in 2001. The original herd consisted of 52 elk\, and over the years their numbers have grown to more than 150. \nAs the elk population continues to grow\, though\, there are some interaction issues when the elk end up in places they aren’t supposed to be—for instance\, in our local farmer’s fields. SUMMARY:Experience the Art and History of Western NC at the Earl Lanning –Charles Miller Tribute Weekend
DESCRIPTION:An experience rich event to honor two of Haywood County’s most outstanding local artists and historians. There will be a full day of activities\, along with the award presentation at the resort to celebrate their work. \nHaywood County natives Charles Miller and Earl Lanning have roots firmly entrenched in Smoky Mountain soil. Both men can trace their family tree in WNC back to the Revolutionary War era and both had ancestors who fought on the 1776 Rutherford Campaign and at the Battle of Kings Mountain.  \nMore importantly\, these 21st century renaissance men are passionate about history and art and have led extremely interesting and colorful lives. Today they are widely recognized for their expertise in 18th century history\, firearms and accoutrements\, as well as local genealogy\, metalwork and wooden and bronze sculptures –including a life-size sculpture of a mountain militia man created by Lanning at the Haywood County Courthouse. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the second Land and Sky Relay\, returning on Saturday\, November 6\, 2021.  We are grateful to all of the teams that joined us for our inaugural journey in 2019 and look forward to seeing them again plus a host of teams from across the country. \nThis one day running relay race will take four and six-person teams on a sixty-three mile journey from Asheville to Cherokee\, North Carolina through amazing valleys and up and down breathtaking ridges. \nWe have made some changes for 2021 including three redesigned legs near the end of the race that will include parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Mountains to Sea Trail.  What won’t change is our unique format\, incredible scenery and our fabulous staff and volunteers. \nWe hope you and your friends will join us on this adventure. \nRegistration \nOnline registration for the Land and Sky Relay opens at 9:00 AM on February 1\, 2021. \nFor 2021\, we are allowing teams of four and six people to participate. \nEveryone on the team must be 21 years or older. \nRace Capacity \nIn order to provide the best possible experience\, the race will be capped at 100 teams.

Wilderness Survival (also known as bushcraft) is the ability to utilize natural and limited materials in traditional ways to stave alive and escape danger. \nIn modern society\, learning these skills is not only important for the occasional forays into dangerous environments\, but also helps in building confidence\, self-esteem\, and instilling a sense of self-knowledge while re-connecting with nature and our human past. \nWhile we might not think we need these skills if we avoid nature\, there are still instances where we might need to call upon them including natural disasters\, getting lost in the woods\, extreme shifts in weather\, accidents causing some form of incapacitation\, and many other unforeseen circumstances. \nTherefore\, it is prudent and wise for every human to have at least a rudimentary capability in the basic skills of survival to ensure their continued existence. These include the ability to: \n\nBuild a fire\nBuild a shelter\nTie Knots\nNavigate without a GPS\nApply First Aid\nEvaluate gear and supplies\nMaster the essentials of hiking and camping.\n\nThe MSMHC is proud to announce the addition of acclaimed author\, outdoor survival expert\, record setting hiker and elite Wilderness Search and Rescue Team member\, Nancy East\, to our roster of expert artists for our 2022 programs. Nancy will launch the spring hiking season with a presentation on Friday night\, March 18\, describing her adventures as a Search and Rescue member. On Saturday\, March 19 Nancy devotes an entire day to a variety of the above mentioned wilderness survival topics to ensure your safety\, comfort and enjoyment as you create memorable experiences hiking in the Great Smokies. \nSpace is limited to ten students to guarantee individual attention and Nancy provides all materials needed for event.

Besides all the mountain roads do not miss the hilarious Bike Games where $1\,000 cash prize goes to the winners and another $1\,000 cash prize to the Bike Show winners. \nYou can join us at the Thunder in the Smokies every spring\, summer and fall for a weekend of fun. We will be in Maggie Valley\, NC on the main road\, Hwy 19\, only minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Maggie Valley is less than ten minutes from I-40. DESCRIPTION:The 8th Annual Slingshots in The Smokies\, also known as the Super Bowl of Slingshot Events\, will once again take place post Memorial Day until the following Saturday! \nSlingshot Roadsters is proud to announce that there will be new and exciting additions to be included during this upcoming Smokies 2022 event. \nDuring the event in 2019 we broke the world record for Slingshots in a parade. Exactly 300 was the number. It was so much fun for all we have decided on the Friday of the rally to once again try and break 300 and if possible reach 400. After the record attempt there will be a great band on stage a party featuring fun & dancing. \nAn autocross will be held for 2 days during the event. This was previously conducted during a Slingshot Roadsters Event in Colorado many years ago and was deemed to be a huge success! New competitions will be held on Friday with more fun coming up on Saturday! \nSmoky Falls Lodge\, the new hotel addition with a full remodeled bar and restaurant\, outdoor entertainment area on the river and multiple events held on the property is now exclusively available for accommodation via Slingshot Roadsters new All-inclusive Platinum Package!
